Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a communication protocol designed to enhance the traditional Short Message Service (SMS) on mobile devices. It offers a more advanced and feature-rich messaging experience, bridging the gap between standard SMS and modern messaging apps. Some of the key features of RCS include:

1. Multimedia Messaging (MMS): RCS allows users to send multimedia content such as pictures, videos, audio messages, and other file types directly through the messaging app.

2. Read Receipts: Users can see when their messages have been delivered and read by the recipient, providing a more interactive and real-time communication experience.

3. Typing Indicators: RCS shows when someone is typing a response, similar to the experience in many instant messaging apps.

4. Group Chat: RCS supports group messaging with the ability to see when others in the group are typing, share multimedia content, and have a more dynamic group chat experience.

5. High-Resolution Images and File Sharing: Unlike traditional SMS, RCS supports higher resolution images and allows users to share a wider range of file types with better quality.

6. Integration with Third-Party Services: RCS enables integration with various third-party services, allowing users to interact with apps, make reservations, and perform other actions directly within the messaging app.

7. Enhanced Security: RCS supports end-to-end encryption, providing a higher level of security for user communications.

8. Wi-Fi and Data Usage: RCS can work over Wi-Fi or mobile data, offering more flexibility in how messages are sent and received.

9. Business Messaging: RCS supports richer business-to-consumer (B2C) and consumer-to-business (C2B) interactions, allowing businesses to provide interactive and engaging content through messaging.

10. Improved Group Chat Controls: RCS offers more robust controls for managing group chats, including the ability to add or remove participants, customize group settings, and more.

These features collectively aim to bring SMS closer to the functionality and user experience provided by popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and iMessage. RCS is designed to be a universal standard for messaging across different carriers and devices, fostering interoperability and a consistent user experience.

Apple will be including the RCS features in it's iOS in 2024. It has finally relented to the pressure from regulators and competitors mainly Google and Samsung. In a statement to 9to5 Mac an Apple spokesperson said that the company believes RCS will offer better inter-operability for cross-platform messages.

"Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association. We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users."

The @Andriod account on X (formerly Twitter) posted:

"We believe everyone deserves to communicate inclusively no matter what phone they have. This is one huge step closer to doing that. Excited for Apple to embrace RCS, the modern industry standard, to help make messaging better for everyone."

After the adoption of C-type chargers for iPhones this is yet another move from Apple in line to keep abreast with the competition.
